Indo-China Relations – SAIESH REDDY

It’s a prolonged story to recite, right from the sages of ancient ages to the current visit of Chinese foreign minister to India. We share deep and robust relationship with each other on global, geo-political, economical, strategical and military ends.

Friends, I would like to address this topic in three parts,

  • Firstly, How was our past with China?
  • Secondly, what’s the current scenario?
  • Lastly, What’s the way forward?

Our past with China right from the Kushan dynasty is an example of fraternity and viewed with a great importance as both countries share common Spiritual and Religious ideology but the pillars of problems evolved when India and China were completely isolated during British Colonial period for almost seven decades and Post-Independence India territories were thrown open to ascend or descend the Union of India. This was the time when territorial tensions between both the nations started escalating and eventually led to the Sino-Indo war of 1962 due to the disputed Himalayan Border of North East and there after it started becoming more evident.

After witnessing Doklham , Galwan and Young Lieutenant story of Indian Army at Sikkim who gave bloody nose to China Major. It is learnt that China-India boundary question is a complex and sensitive issue left over from history and to encounter it multi level dialogues have been taken place for resolving it peacefully with tranquillity. That’s why not even a single bullet has been fired at LAC over a period of time though manned fights are seen often but both the nations have restrained themselves from creating a war like situation. By also observing on economical sides India and China are part of BRICS , SCO, G20 , AIIB and so on. Which gives a glimpse of wise economical plan where both the nations are aspiring to become self-sustainable with at ease of their sovereignty also Both countries have potential threat of Terrorism which can be countered by proper synergy and right advocacy, which can also help the world and particularly south Asian nations to benefit out of it. Apart from the formal cooperation there are evidences of cyber wars against India from which was dealt adequately by banning Chinese Sponsored applications in India and in the field of maritime fronts by countering string of pearls with necklace of diamonds and so on. Even during the COVID pandemic which was of course spread by China , they extended help in procuring oxygen concentrators when country was under going lack of health infrastructure.

We countered China in many ends, if china came up with CPEC we built Chabhar port in Iran to blockade Chinese trade during the times of contingencies , if it came up with Salami slice strategy we countered it by joining QUAD and made it backoff through diplomatic channels, If it came up with string of pearls , we retaliated with Diamond of necklace. If it tried to alienate our neighbors we built more close ties with them and did the same using QUAD as a channel with them by building influence in South China Sea. Chinese follow this strategy of making themselves awkward in every forum, they take out an issue and speak about it in every where they and make and doesn’t negotiate it is proved as a disputed area.

So by adjoining all these facts with a cautious optimism I would like to conclude it by saying that China is of great importance to India atleast for a certain period of time in multilevel ends because of its rich ForEX reserves, solid military strength and sustainable policies Where India can learn from it in fields like employing youth into developmental work, enhancing the capabilities of MNCs , controlling population, alleviating poverty and becoming Aatma Nirbhar but also not forgetting how it betrayed in the past. We must always think ahead of it and propel preparedness.
