10 Unknown women entrepreneurs of India

Female Entrepreneurs comprise 1/3rd of entrepreneurs worldwide. Women became more involved in entrepreneurship only when the idea of women in entrepreneurship became digestible to general masses.

In the late 1900’s due to feminism and progressive thinking, women entrepreneurs became widely accepted. In India, around 14% of businesses are run by women entrepreneurs. In these businesses, most of them are small-scale and are about 79% are self-financed.

Here are 10 unknown women entrepreneurs who have managed to rise in the male-dominated business atmosphere of India.

 

1)Mehvish Mushtaq, Srinagar

Mehvish introduced Dial Kashmir an android application, which is basically “Yellow pages” for Kashmir. This application provides the users with all the essential phone numbers, email ids and addresses of various government departments in Kashmir. This application has become a one-stop solution for information regarding various government departments.

2) Pabiben Rabari, Kukadsar

Pabiben Rabari, regarded as the first women artisan entrepreneur in India, can be called as a brand ambassador for the colorful district Kutch. She joined Rabari Women group and started crafting many unique designs of embroidery including Hari Jari and Pabi Jari. Currently, she employs around 60 women making 25 designs and is based out of Kukadsar.

3) Tamanna Sharma, Delhi

Earthling First Pvt Ltd is a sustainable event and event waste management company started by Tamanna Sharma and is a venture of its own kind. A company tries to empower women and always has an equal ratio of men and women.

4) Sobita Tamuli, Telana

Sobita Tamuli from Assam’s Telana village brought an entrepreneurial revolution wave by manufacturing and selling kehusaar (organic manure) and japis(traditional hats from Assam) without involving middlemen.

Seuji, a self-help group started by Sobita, made it possible for the farmers to access organic manure.

5) Hemalatha Annamalai, Coimbatore

Coimbatore based Hemalatha Annamalai, founded a company Ampere Electric that manufactures electric vehicles for waste management and differently abled people. She made a name for herself in the field that is strictly male dominant.

 

6) Thinras Chorol, Ladakh

Thinras Chorol founded Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company in 2009 promoting ecotourism in Ladakh and encouraging mountaineering and traveling among women. This is  Ladakh’s first travel company owned and operated by women with over 30 working staff.

7) Neha Arora, Delhi

Planet Abled, started by Neha Arora in 2016 was aimed at making traveling hassle-free for the differently abled people. The venture employs tour guides and moderators who make traveling free without barriers for the differently abled people.

8) Sumita Ghose, Bikaner

Rangsutra, the brainchild of Sumita Ghose comprises 3000 artisans from remote villages of India selling a range of handcrafted products to stalwart brands like Fab India and IKEA.

It has 35 groups of artisans from MP, UP, Rajasthan, West Bengal.

 

9) Chayaa Nanjappa, Mysuru

Chayaa Nanjappa has been awarded “National Best Entrepreneur Award” in food processing in 2014. She spearheaded a company Nectar Fresh that produces monofloral honey which is supplied to Europe and United States and is one of the bulk suppliers of honey in the country. This establishment not only provides employment to illiterate communities of Mandya and Mysuru but also tribal communities across the state.

10) Laksmi Menon, Ernakulam

Pure Living started by Lakshmi Menon offers an eco-friendly alternative to plastic pens and wooden pencils that grow into trees when disposed of. This enterprise has helped elderly and differently abled women.
